Olympic Efforts to Protect Wild Salmon

This Wednesday’s NBC story on the plight of wild pacific salmon (broadcast to 10 million) provided a fitting cap to a month of outstanding global media coverage on the issue – thrust into the spotlight by a series of creative initiatives during the Games.  The last of these was a visit to the final event in Whistler – the 50 km Nordic Ski Race – to try and present King Harald V of Norway with a letter signed by over 170 concerned wild salmon advocates.  The King, who was in attendance for his favorite event, has promoted the Norwegian salmon farming industry in the past.

Watch this new 3 min video from the Nordic Ski Race – featuring Nicole Mackay, whose family owns Mackay Whale Watching in the Broughton Archipelago, hard-hit by the impacts of Norwegian open-net salmon farms.  Nicole braved security to try and deliver the letter and invite the King for a whale watching tour (ED note: Canada took 5th, not 2nd as indicated – clearly my mind was on other things 🙂 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53IjgAo5O4E

And watch these 4 other short videos documenting some of these Olympic activities:
