350: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR CLIMATE ACTION

Tomorrow, you will be taking part in the single most widespread day of political action that the earth has ever seen.

AROUND THE WORLD…

·         A Global 350 Mosaic: Organizers in Sydney and Beijing are forming giant human 3’s, while activists in London and Delhi make huge 5’s, and citizens in Copenhagen and Quito form enormous 0’s, together making a global 350, a symbol of the need for all of us to work together.

·         In Kenya, 350 Maasai children will perform a jumping dance, highlighting that for their pastoral lifestyle, climate change is already underfoot.

·         Across China, over 200 events are planned at iconic locations like wind-turbine farms, coastal cities, and at melting glaciers.

·         In Mexico City, thousands of students and citizens will form a giant 350 human banner visible from the air in the famous Venustiano Carranza Plaza.

Over 4,600 actions have now been registered in 177 countries – take a look at the map!

IN SQUAMISH…

11am – Are you a bike enthusiast? Join students outside the Library at Quest University and enjoy the ride to the Adventure Centre.

12pm – Introduction at the Adventure Centre: Come in and enjoy music, videos, elementary school choirs, education booths, market vendors and more.
12:30pm – Learn what the Sea-to-Sky communities are doing to ease the effects of climate change and get us closer to a more sustainable future. Speeches by;

Squamish Mayor Greg Gardner, Whistler Councillor Eckhard Zeidler, Pemberton Councillor Lisa Ames.

1pm – Community 350 photo. Come outside! We’ll form the number 350(1)  with human bodies (ooookkkkk, your dog can be in it too). A picture will be taken from the roof of the Adventure Centre (oh, and don’t be deterred by the rain!) Along with a carbon footprint banner to be made on the spot, it will be sent to the Copenhagen Climate Conference in December. (1) 350 parts per million (ppm) CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe limit for humanity. We are currently at 385.92ppm and rising.

1:30pm – Enjoy the music, the nature walk, the speakers… get informed at the booths and learn about small, local, simple steps that we can all easily take.

2:30pm – Special screening of the movie The Age of Stupid.
