DFO INACTION NEGLECTS CARE FOR SALMON FRY SUFFERING FROM SEA LICE INFESTATIONS

Hello from Echo Bay, Broughton BC

We are having a bit of a problem. For the first time ever, DFO are late in granting the researchers here the permit to catch and handle the fish. By law, they can take 30 days to grant the permit; otherwise, they get a ticket. Well, they have now gone beyond the 30-day limit, something that has not happened before. The people here are suspicious, needless to say.

So, we are waiting for the permit and, in the meantime, we have taken a look at the fish (not touched them) – they have lice on them. We are spending the time working around the field station and enjoying the weather. We have been digging clams for dinner (see picture), barbecuing oysters, gardening, making repairs, playing pool and soccer with the locals, sharing stories, learning from each other…

I’ll keep you posted, but things are not looking very promising right now.

Hope all is going well in Squamish. Miss you all!

Ana
